Tips for Keeping Your Scene Going During Dialogue

Sometimes the hardest part about dialogue isn’t writing the dialogue itself but incorporating the dialogue into a scene.  Dialogue exchanges should flow seamlessly into the narrative, but it can be tempting to let your characters run with their dialogue (especially if it’s particularly witty or especially affecting) and leave the narrative behind. But dialogue usually works best if characters remain active during the exchange – in other words, if the narrative carries on while they talk.  To that end, here are some tips for making dialogue a seamless part of your narrative:

DO NOT allow the scene to devolve into “talking heads” where the passage contains nothing but line of dialogue after line of dialogue.

DO consider giving your characters something to do while they talk—cleaning up after supper, rebuilding an engine block, bathing the children. In reality, only those conversations that are designed to be done in the absence of other activities (meetings or appointments, for instance) or those that are very, very important (and sometimes not even those) happen with two people simply there looking at each other.

DO NOT rely on generic gestures (things anyone might do such as shrugging, nodding, raising their eyebrows, et cetera) along for action during dialogue exchanges.  These become repetitive and don’t tell readers much about the characters or how they feel about the dialogue they are exchanging.

DO allow characters to “be themselves” during dialogue exchanges. Instead of generic gestures, allow characters to engage in their own particular quirks (perhaps one rubs the palm of one hand with the opposite thumb whenever he’s nervous, for example). These actions will individualize your characters and will help make the dialogue exchange more interesting.

DO NOT allow the setting always to narrow to nothing but the characters involved in the dialogue exchange.

DO incorporate what is going on in the scene around the characters into the dialogue exchange occasionally.  Perhaps the dog runs through the family’s long-put-off intervention with Aunt Jenny. Maybe the sound of the neighbor chopping wood next door irritates Julia so much that she snaps at Javi and sets off an argument.

DO NOT be afraid to allow point of view characters moments of introspection during dialogue exchanges.

DO allow the reader access to what the point of view character is thinking and feeling about what is being said, as well as what all of the characters involved are doing.

DO NOT overuse dialogue tags in a long exchange. If it is clear who is speaking, ditch the tag. They just clutter up a scene when they are not necessary for clarity. (To ensure clarity, throw in a tag any time it’s been at least five lines since any character has been identified as the one speaking.)

DO use actions to identify speakers in dialogue exchanges rather than tags when possible.If Sakura nods just before she speaks, there’s no need for “Sakura said” after she speaks.

Following these tips should help keep your dialogue and your narrative working together well.

Happy writing!

He can’t stand her. She thinks he’s crazy. Will their feelings stay etched in permanent ink?

Cruz Hunter has always stuck out in his small hometown. Now that he’s covered in tattoos, the residents peg him as even more of an outcast. It seems like the whole world is against his dream of opening a local tattoo parlor.

When he finally finds the perfect place for his new business, Cruz discovers a pastor and his daughter have already bought it. The only thing more irritating than the change in his plan is Talia, a beautiful and feisty argument in a dress. Cruz would like nothing more than to have her out of his life and his mind, but for some reason, she’s the only thing he can think about.

If Cruz and Talia can stop arguing long enough, opposites may do much more than attract.

EXCERPT

The snow glistened in the sun and crunched under Cruz Hunter’s boots as he walked toward the building that would soon be his.
“It’s perfect, yo.” He turned to Jake, his younger brother. “Wait until you see it up close.” This road had yet to be treated, so they had to park and walk a block.
Jake tightened his scarf. “Almost looks like a church.”
“It was—a long time ago. Then it was a restaurant before being abandoned.”
“It’s going to take some work.” Jake squinted.
“Not too much, dude.” Nothing was going to crush Cruz’s enthusiasm today. The old, brown building with peeling paint and weather-worn wood paneling was going to be his—just as soon as he signed the papers. “Mostly just the outside. It’s gonna be perfect for my tattoo parlor.”
“Well, you know I’ll help as much as I can.” Jake didn’t sound convinced.
“Don’t judge it ‘til you see the inside.” Cruz pulled up a leather sleeve and scratched his newest tattoo, the feet of a dragon which was part of a much larger work going up most of his arm.
“I won’t,” Jake promised.
Cruz’s pulse raced with each step as they neared the building. There wasn’t a person alive who could convince him it wasn’t the most beautiful building in existence. He’d wanted to open his tat shop for as long as he could remember, and with Kittle Falls being such a small town, it had taken a lot of work to convince the town council to even consider giving him permission to open a shop. They finally conceded when he found a property at the edge of town where no tourist would ever accidentally stumble upon it.
“It looks pretty cool,” Jake said. “How are we going to see inside?”
“Windows, man. Ever heard of ‘em?” Cruz laughed and gave his brother a playful shove.
“You mean those fancy glass things some buildings have?” Jake joked.
They finally reached the property line. Cruz took a deep breath, taking in the sight. “Isn’t she beautiful?”
“Um…”
Cruz stared at the solid structure. “You see hard work and a building as aged as old man Kittle himself—”
“Who’s long been dead,” Jake added.
“But I see opportunity. A dream fulfilled.” Cruz stared at the building a moment longer. “You ready to see her up close?”
“That’s why I’m here.”
Cruz took a step forward, but froze when the front door opened.
“Ghosts?” Jake asked.
Cruz held his breath, not sure of the answer. “Maybe it’s our lucky day,” Cruz said. “If the door’s unlocked, I can give you the grand tour.”
A slim, middle-aged man wearing black slacks and matching shiny shoes stepped out onto the porch. He appeared to be speaking to someone inside. A beautiful blonde about Cruz’s age, wearing a blue dress under a long, thick winter coat stepped out.
Jake turned to Cruz and arched an eyebrow. Cruz shook his head.
“What’s going on?” Jake whispered.
“I got nothin’.” Cruz took a deep breath of the chilled early-December air.
“Building inspectors?” Jake asked.
“Maybe.” Cruz frowned, watching the duo. They acted like they owned the place.
Finally, the guy closed the door and locked it, stuffing the key into his jacket pocket.
Cruz exchanged a worried glance with his brother as irritation set in. Something wasn’t right. He stepped forward, meeting the two of them at the bottom step.
“Greetings,” said the man. He smiled warmly at Cruz.
Cruz didn’t respond.
“Are you a neighbor?” asked the girl.
“You could say that,” Cruz said. “Who are you?”
The man smiled and held out his hand. “My name’s Pastor Allen Tisdale, and this is my daughter, Talia.”
She smiled sweetly and extended her hand, also.
Cruz flicked his head in acknowledgment, but ignored their extended hands. “What are you doing here?”
Jake stepped forward, taking Allen’s hand. “Excuse my brother. I’m Jake Hunter, and he’s Cruz. You must be new to Kittle Falls. Welcome.”
“Thank you,” Allen said. “Talia and I have bought this building. I understand it was a restaurant for a decade or so, but we’re going to restore it to a church.”
Cruz stared at him, unable to find words. That was probably a good thing, considering the words he would have chosen.

I don’t stick to a single genre in my writing, reading, or viewing. My favorite shows include Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Pretty Little Liars, Lost Girl, Vampire Diaries, and Once Upon a Time.

I’ve been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my story telling would get me into trouble because I would try to convince others that my stories were real.

When I’m not busy writing, I like spending time with my family and friends. I also educate my kids from home.

Time Has Come to Slow Down

Blog Followers and Readers

Last month my husband and I were faced with some unexpected decisions.  I continued blogging but slowed down offering giveaways and such.  The time has come with the upcoming holidays and moving at the end of the month that I need to focus on other important matters from now until mid January.  I am anticipating next year to be a better time for reading, reviewing, selling, blogging and offering giveaways.

The next few weeks are going to be stressful for many reasons.  For all of you that pray, I would appreciate your prayers for things to move smoothly.  There is a lot to be done, and there are obstacles that need to be confronted along the way.

I know I have some reviews that should be done this month.  I had really good intentions to blog during this crisis, but it is hard to read a book at this time.  In January before I request more books I need to finish the ones I want to read from this month.

Enjoy your holidays and come back early next year.

Further Than Yesterday documents the result of a split second, a single moment. The time it took to make a decision that changed a Naval Aviator’s life and sent him down a path he never imagined. That path lead to a personal hell that tried to claim his life during a horrible journey struggling with the complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Fortunately, the decision to continue was made, helped by one courageous four-legged service dog. Follow the descent into hell and then The Long Walk to Sanity and the service dog program called “Paws Fur Thought”. One Yellow Lab named Thai was there every step, helping the transition from Despair and Depression to Hope and Optimism. Thai and other service dogs like her have changed the landscape of the battlefield of PTSD and Mental Health.

Further than Yesterday will challenge the reader to confront their own humanity, and their society’s betrayal of its military veterans. The story is a raw, brutal and poignant journey that confronts head on mental health issues including the “Black Dog” of Depression and Suicide.

Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. None of that mattered because the scrolls in question could not be found. Scholars labeled it a hoax, something that never existed. It was ludicrous to imagine someone speaking from the grave. They were wrong on both accounts.

Review: Exotic Barn Finds: : Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and More by Matt Stone.

This is a beautifully illustrated book about exotic barn finds that involve cars. I reviewed the book with my husband's influence of his recommendations of his delight of the book. All across the country there are pickers looking for rare finds, and this author shares tales of car finds in barns. There is even a story that features Jay Leno and his find of a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing. It was interesting reading and seeing the pictures about cars in very bad shape and then being restored to its original glory. Any car collector, picker or lover of old things will enjoy this book. I just love the details in the pictures. I also enjoyed the story of this author's first barn find - every person's dream come true.

Received complimentary from the author for a honest review.

Description from Book:

In “Exotic Barn Finds,” veteran author and historian Matt Stone tells the story of more than 25 barn finds. The unique twist? Rather than the usual prewar or muscle car era product out of Detroit, these cars are all beloved imported sports cars of a bygone era. Think Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Aston-Martin, Porsche, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and others. There is even a Jay Leno-found 300SL Gullwing in the mix!

Although there is no shortage of “barn find” tales surfacing these days, no collection covers exclusively the imported sports car icons that have become household names from an era past. All the tales are told with full detail on how they were found and why they are special. If you are a sports car fan or just love a good automotive treasure hunt, “Exotic Barn Finds” is an excellent addition to your library or nightstand.
